The heatpress needs to have a consistent temperature both accross he entire platen and be able to hold that temperature for the duration of the pressing. You ccan't always guarantee that from a cheaper press.

HTV is great for simple logos and text on workwear and general garments. Sublimation is imited to white/light polyester but you can print full colour complex designs. There are also plenty of other substrates you can sublimate onto.
